DC Public Library teams up with Washington Wizards for winter reading challenge

When it’s cold and snowy outside, it’s the perfect time to stay warm indoors with a good book. The DC Public Library is bringing that cozy feeling to life with its Winter Reading Challenge, now underway. The program offers kids an engaging way to spend the winter months, with chances to win prizes from the Washington Wizards.

“Even if there’s snow all around you, you can walk to the library to get a cozy book to read,” said Tora Burns, Reading Programs Coordinator. “There’s something for everyone during the winter months.”

This year’s challenge centers around a bingo board filled with activities designed to inspire creativity and exploration. Tasks include bringing a friend to the library, drawing a character from a book, or getting a recommendation from a librarian. Aimed at children ages 5 to 19, the program helps keep young minds active during the winter.

“We also encourage you to exercise for 20 minutes and then read for 20 minutes,” Burns added. “Studies show that developing a habit of reading for 20 minutes a day significantly increases reading capacity.”

The library also encourages participants to explore new genres, such as biographies or graphic novels.

“This is especially important for children who might be reluctant readers,” Burns explained. “Graphic novels, with their rich imagery, often help spark a love for reading.”

Completing five activities in a row on the bingo board earns participants a prize. Rewards include customizable Washington Wizards jerseys, fan packs with bookmarks, mini basketball hoops, and even tickets to a Wizards game.

Burns hopes families take advantage of their local libraries to discover new favorites.

“The only expectation we have is that you come with questions, curiosity, and kindness,” she said. “We want to ensure all D.C. residents feel welcome.”

Bingo boards are available in person at library locations or online. The Winter Reading Challenge runs through February 28.
